Blowjob Girl's Other "Job"
With the U.S. version of The Office now in its sixth season it’s time for the show to interject the situations with some fresh blood. We’ve seen cast members come and go, most notably the addition of Ed Helms’ and Rashida Jones’ characters in the third season, but the show has taken a risk with the newest cast member, Ellie Kemper as receptionist Erin. Not only does Kemper have a limited resume` but the character she is playing is unlike any character we’ve ever seen on The Office before. With her most notable performance as a girl unskilled at oral sex in a viral Youtube video, Kemper is far less seasoned than the majority of her co-stars but has certainly risen to the occasion. So far her character is extremely likable and funny, if difficult to grasp based on what we are accustom to on the show.
Since its inception The Office has been described best by the John Paul Sarte quote “hell is other people.” The crux of the show relies on the insanity of characters driving a metaphorical spike into the head other characters. Whether it’s Dwight’s exercise ball annoying Jim, or Michael’s inappropriate sexual comments to Pam, or Pam’s lack of devotion for party planning to Angela. The combinations are endless and these interactions are what keep the show interesting. This is why the new receptionist Erin is an unusual but refreshing addition. As a character that has been quoted (in a deleted scene) as saying, “I have liked every person I’ve ever met,” Erin is the unflappable co-worker who creepily gets along with everybody.
Erin’s character was a bold step for the writers of the show who have so far focused on tension and romantic relationships. Erin brings a sunny, genuinely positive challenge to the rest of the crew, who are unable to hate her and who she is unable to hate. I’m sure they’ll find a way but for now I’m enjoying the new perspective that Kemper brings to The Office.
